Abstract

The melt spinning at 1800m/min for propylene-ethylene random copolymer (hereafter “R-PP”) mixed withcollagen powder became possible by adding a proper quantity of maleic anhydride ethlene copolymer. Moisture regains of produced fibers containing 10wt% collagen powder (hereafter “C/PP fiber”) were 0.7% and 2.4% at 35% RH and 95%RH, respectively. It was found that the absorbed water vapor was equivalent to the 73% of saturated moisture of collagen powder mixed in the fiber. It is concluded here that the C/PP fiber has a good moisture respiratory function. The bare collagen particles on the surface of C/PP fiber were not observed by SEM inspection. One of the reasons why the mixed collagen powder absorbs water vapor effectively may be the high water vaper transmission rate of thin R-PP layers covering over the collagen particles. The degree of gloss for C/PP fibers arranged parallel was smaller than that for R-PP fibers, and the friction coefficient for the former was larger than that of the latter.
