Low temperature gas carbonitriding (LTGCN) process is one of rapid nitriding processes. With this process, carbon and nitrogen are simultaneously supplied from ammonia (NH3) gas and endothermic (CO+H2+N2+CH4) gas at elevated temperature below ferritic/austenitic transformation temperature, so this process is named “Ferritic Gas Carbonitriding” in some case.1)
For prolonging die life, nitriding or rapid nitriding is the superior surface hardening treatment comparing with any other methods, and the main reason of that is little change of dimension or shape of die after treatment. Among many nitriding and rapid nitriding methods, LTGCN is most preferable method in industrial view point, because LTGCN process is more economical than gas nitriding or ion nitriding process, and is cleaner for envioronment than tufftriding process (Salt Carbonitriding).
In this study, characteristics of hot-work die steels after LTGCN were investigated in the laboratory and application studies were carried out in aluminum extrusion shop, press forging shop and steel extrusion shop. Results obtained are written below briefly.
(1) Case depth is different from steel to steel and among hot-work die steels, JIS SKD61 (similar to AISI H 13) has deepest case after LTGCN.
(2) From wear test at elevated temperature, the deeper case is, the less wear loss is.
(3) Charpy impact value is not influenced by LTGCN.
(4) From application studies, it is confirmed that LTGCN is effective for prolonging lives of dies for aluminum extrusion and press forging, surface temperature of those dies are not more than 700°C. For steel extrusion mandrel, surface temperature of which is about 1000°C, LTGCN gives any effect on improving its life.
