For the purpose of developing an estimation of the forest effects to the snow melt, meteorological conditions were observed in forests and at open sites. The experiments for the effects of insolation to snow melt were also carried out. Snow melt in forests were estimated by the heat balance method based upon these results. The results obtained are as follows; (1) Insolation and wind velocity were greatly decreased in forest. The decrease ratio of insolation were different in forest types. (2) The snow melt were decreased with insolation and the times at which snow melt showed the maximal values were delayed with the decrease of insolation. These tendencies were able to be represented by the heat balance method. (3) It was estimated by the heat balance method that the percentages of snow melt in forests to at open site became 10 to 40 % and 50 to 80 % in persistent forests and deciduous forests respectively.
