This paper deals with a method to reconstruct 3 dimensional (3-D) shapes of each part of the heart —left ventricle, left atrium, right ventricle, right atrium, aorta and pulmonary artery— by using a few number of cross sectional images obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) method.
The MRI method gated by ECG gives us several sets of heart images in a cardiac phase. 48 sets of images are obtainable in our case: (1) 3 sets of directions of cross sectional planes i. e., coronal, sagittal and transverse, (2) 4 cross sectional planes on each direction and (3) images at 4 cardiac phases.
3-D shapes of each part of two ventricles and two atriums are reconstructed by the following way: 6 cross sectional images on 2 coronal, 2 sagittal and 2 transverse planes are picked up from 12 images to reconstruct 3-D shape of a part of the heart at a cardiac phase. 6 boundary curves traced on these original MRI data are drawn on the 32×32×32 voxel space, where each cross sectional 3-D shapes of the organ in estimated by connecting the points at which the boundary curves intersect to each cross section of the voxel space.
3-D shapes of the aorta and the pulmonary artery are reconstructed as circular tubes by using center lines and radii on several parts on the lines drawn on the sagittal and coronal images.
Several examples of 3-D shapes of each part of the heart with or without other parts and/or original MRI data are shown. The results of 3-D reconstruction are checked in two ways: The left ventricular volume at each cardiac phase obtained from 3-D data is compared with that obtained from X-ray cineangiocardiograms, where two sets of volume values show good correspondence. The curves of intersection of 3-D shapes of each organ to the original MRI cross sectional planes are located on appropriate positions of the original MRI images. These results tell us that the 3-D shapes reconstructed are acceptable ones.
