Abstract

Composite particles composed of magnetite and polystyrene were prepared by suspension polymerization. Magnetite powder was treated by silane coupling agent for the adjustment of the affinity for the applicable liquid-liquid system. During the polymerization, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was added into the system for the prevention of the coalescing of polymer droplets.
The use of highly hydrophobic magnetite caused polymer droplets to coalesce, resulted in the composite particles in which magnetite powder was dispersed. The quick addition of poly (vinyl alcohol) prevented coalescence, resulted in the composite particles uniformly coated by magnetite powder.
It was found that the structure of composite particles could be controlled by adjusting the addition time of poly (vinyl alcohol).
