  As the result of several studies on the mechanical properties, etc. of the electron beam welded gray cast iron, the fusion zone was found to harden (HV852) and marked cracks and porosity were observed in the bead welding of gray cast iron. On the other hand, no weld defect was found and there was a tendency for hardness to decrease sharply in the insert type welding of gray cast iron. In the tensile tests for the SUS310S welded joint, all the tested joints were fractured from the base metal zone. The joint efficiency was 61% for the tensile strength of the base metal before welding (230MPa) and 97% after welding (145MPa). In the fatigue tests for the insert type welded joint, all the tested joints were fractured from the base metal zone under repeated stress, above 81MPa. The fatigue limit of 76MPa was seen in all of the above joints. Further, it is necessary to pay sufficient attention to the decrease of base metal strength after welding, influenced by welding heat.
