Abstract
It is very important for casting designers to efficiently collect and use various appropriate data in pre-production processes. In this study, a multimedia database has been developed considering the requirements of practical casting engineers. First, the database should be helpful for the engineer individually. Secondly, it should be utilized as shared information for several engineers in the same company. Considering cost performance, one of the most popular commercial database system for personal computer is selected to mount the developed module on. The database includes product data and casting design background information. From the need to store in computer various data such as requirements for the product, cost data, customer information, production process condition, drawings, photographs, the system accepts different data formats such as numeric, text, formula, spread sheet, graph, image, CAD data and rule base. A convenient tool to create decision tables in the end user computer environment has also been developed for typical expert systems for diagnostics. This database is being applied to practical casting process planning in relatively small companies indicating usefulness of this system.
