In this paper, the fabrication of dence TiAl by the pressureless combustion synthesis has been attempted, and the synthesis conditions were investigated. The Ti and Al powder were mixed (Ti:Al=1:1 in atomic ratio), and press formed to a compact. It was heated in a vaccum furnace, and the synthesis reation with the thermal explotion mode was generated. For the products obtained, the density, microstructure and phases present were analyzed. The Ni/Al powder was mixed into the Ti/Al powder and the same experiment was attempted as well.
The products synthesized became porous, and full dense TiAl could not be be synthesized. It was guessed that the liquid quantity was insufficient to promote the densification and too small heat of formation would result in the poor densification. Therefore the Ni/Al powder was mixed into the Ti/Al powder as a sintering additive.
When the Ni/Al powder was added to the Ti/Al powder, the product density reached more than 98%. The products consisted of TiAl, Ti3Al and solidified Ti–Ni–Al melt with grain size of about 20 μm. The Vickers hardness and compressive strength of the products were compared to those of the TiAl produced by the fusion process. The synthesis condition for the dence TiAl intermetallic compound by the combustion synthesis route could be determined in this study.
