Abstract
It is not clear that ethanol has an influence on mechanism of onset and progression in ischemic cerebrovascular disease. To begin with we studied effects of 0.5, 0.75, 1g/kg of ethanol and water on hemorheological factors in young healthy men, and revealed that whole blood viscosity increased as ingested alcohol concentration increased. Whole blood viscosity increased more due to dehydration in addition to a direct effect of ethanol and acetaldehyde in more than 1g/kg body weight of ethanol ingestion. In the present study, changes of hemorheological factors were studied in elderly healthy men who ingested ethanol at 0.5 and 1g/kg body weight. Following ingestion of only 1g/kg of ethanol, there were significant changes on rheological factors. The effect of ethanol on the body could be stronger in young men than in elderly men.<BR>It is a suggested that ethanol was associated with the onset and progression in ischemic cerebrovascular disease, because the hemorheology was influenced for the worse with increased concentration of ethanol ingestion.
