Abstract

The objective of this paper is to find an optimal skew angle of a center cutter bit of a tunnel boring machine to minimize the specific energy in the steady excavation.. The shape of the center cutter bit was designed to be a trianglular one to promote the cutability in comparison with another inner cutter bits. Here, a center cutter bit of a diameter of 10cm and an edge angle of π/3 rad was fabricated. Several experiments of the steady excavation at a constant depth and a constant radius for mortar have been executed to clarify the relationships among excavation force, amount of excavation and skew angle of the bit. As the results, it was observed that, for all radii of excavation, the tangential excavation force took a minimum value at the skew angle β=0 rad and increased with the increment of |β|, the centrifugal one took positive values for β>0 rad and negative ones for β<0 rad, the normal one took a maximum value at β=0 rad and decreased with the increment of |β|, and the amount of debris increased with the increment of |β|. Then, it was concluded that the optimum skew angle βopt was 0 rad to minimize the specific energy in the steady excavation.
