In this paper, the author discusses the diurnal variation of local sea-level pressure systems in Central Japan under summer pressure patterns.
In Case 1 (from 21 JST (Japan Standard Time) on July 25 to 03 JST on July 27, 1992), a westerly upper wind blows at an altitude where the air pressure is around 850hPa. During the night of July 25-26, a local anticyclone centered at Takayama is generated, which is also clearly observed after sunrise. In the daytime a local cyclone is generared and is most developed over Suwa at 16 JST on July 26. Late at night on July 26 a local anticyclone is again generated and developed.
In Case 2 (from 18 JST on August 14 to 24 JST on August 15, 1991), an easterly upper wind blows. During the midnight of August 14-15, a local anticyclone is not clearly generated. In the daytime, a local cyclone is generated and is most developed over Suwa at 16 JST on August 15. A local anticyclone, which is generated late at night on August 15, is not clearly observed.
However, in spite of the daytime heating and the nocturnal cooling, the local cyclone and the local anticyclone are not immediately generated and developed. Thus, the heating and cooling of the surface of Central Japan alone cannot cause these diurnal variations.
In the early morning of July 28, 1992, which follows the period of Case 1, a local cyclone, which the author considers to be equivarent to the “Harada vortex (Harada, 1981)” because the conditions of generation are almost identical, is generated. However, judging from wind data, a cyclonic circulation is not clear.
