Chemical Ionization of n-Paraffins(C_<14>-C_<18>)by CH^+_5, C_2H^+_5, and C_3H^+_5 in an Ion-Trap Type of Mass Spectrometer

Chemical ionization of <I>n</I>-paraffins (C<SUB>n</SUB>H<SUB>2n+2</SUB> : n = 14∼18) by the CH<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>, C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP>, and C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> ions has been studied using an ion-trap type of GC/MS under a reactant-ion-selected mode. In all the reactions, C<SUB>n</SUB>H<SUB>2n+1</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> and C<SUB>m</SUB>H<SUB>2m+1</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> (m = 3∼n−3) ions were observed. The most favorable fragment C<SUB>m</SUB>H<SUB>2m+1</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> ion in the CH<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> reaction was m = 8, while that in the C<SUB>2</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> and C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> reactions was m = n−5 or n−6.
