The Matsuyama fault belongs to the eastern boundary fault system between the Shonai plain to the west and the Dewa Mountains to the east in northern Japan. The authors recognized this fault as an active fault based on the interpretation of aerial photographs and a field survey. The fault offsets the surrounding surfaces for 7km in north-south strikes with the east side the upper part of a dip-slip component.<br>Flexural scarps associated with back tilting are characteristic of the deformation along the Matsuyama fault. Reverse faults are inferred under the influence of this deformation. Accumulated deformation due to the activity of the Matsuyama fault during the late Quaternary is recognized. The average slip rate of the fault based on vertical separation is estimated to be 0.2-0.7m/kyrs in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene.
