The relationships of the number of spawned eggs per unit shell size [NUSS=number of spawned egg×shell length (mm) -1×shell width (mm) -1×shell height (mm) -1] and egg diameter with the performance of embryos and larvae (fertilization rate, hatching rate, rate of normal-shaped larvae, and larval survival) were examined in order to develop an index for the evaluation of egg and larval viability in hatchery operation of Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. Although small NUSS (<99) resulted in variable survival, large NUSS were always associated with high survival. Thus, NUSS may be used to predict the viability of embryos and larvae. High frequency of small NUSS (>80%), which observed in both wild and reared broodstock, indicated that the importance of the use of fully ripe broodstock for spawning induction. No relationship was observed between egg diameter and early survival of the embryos and larvae. High percentage of feeding among first feeding larvae generally assured good survival.
