Abstract

The present study investigated the maturation, spawning, molting cycle, and growth of eyestalkablated (group A) and unablated (group B) P. muelleri reared in a tank. In adition, the adequency of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and coloration of ovary for the purpose of assesing the stage of the gonadal maturation was evaluated.<BR>The assesment of the stage of ovarian maturation by gonadosomatic index and the coloration showed that P. muelleri can spawn only after attaining Stage-IV (GSI 10.3±1.9 %) . The smallest unablated spawner had a body weight of 18.3 g and completely spawned 268, 000 eggs 16 days after the onset of the experiment. No significant difference was observed between the molting cycle of ablated (21.2±4 days) and unablated (22.4±3 days) females. However, the molting cycle increased with an increase of spawner size between 4 and 28 g. The growth rates of carapace length and body weight per momth between group A and B showed no significant difference. Based on the maturity, spawning, and mating rates, it was considered that a frequent spawners were over 18 g in size. The ovarian development in both groups as slow and steady. Females attained Stage-I 4-5 days after molt and then took another 6-8 days to spawn. The interval between the first and the second spawnings was 7 days. There was no a significant difference between the spawning rates of groups A and B.
