Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of growth rate and fish size selection on body composition of striped jack, Pseudocaranx dentex fingerlings. In Experiment I, samples of three sizes (large, medium, and small) of fish were collected on two different days from a single net cage. In Experiment II, fish were divided 49 days after hatching into three distinct size-groups (large, medium and small) employing a selection net, and cultured in net cages separate. Samples of fast, medium, and slow-growing fish were taken from the net cages holding the large and small size-group of fish after a 90-day rearing period.<BR>The body protein content was high while the lipid content was low in the slow-growing fish compared to those with fast growth. The body composition of the slow-growing fish tended to resemble the composition of the wild fish. On the other hand, the two samples of the slow-growing fish obtained from the net cages holding large and small size-groups showed similar body compositions irrespective of their sizes. The ash content was affected by fish size; a linear relationship was obtained [Y=-0.0745X+17.25 (r= 0.79) ] between ash content (%; Y) and total length (mm; X) . These results suggested that body compositions were much influenced by the growth rate and selection size of fish.
