The effect of the supernatant of sweetpotato shochu distillatory slops on the growth of Nannochloropsis sp. was tested in a xenic culture. Sodium acetate was also tested as a reference source of carbon to shed light on the mechanism of the utilization of the slops's supernatant. The supernatant was supplied at initiation of the culture at a concentration of 80 ppm in dissolved organic carbon. Sodium acetate was supplied every other day at 20 ppm. Both supernatant and sodium acetate accelerated the growth of Nannochloropsis sp. It was considered that dissolved inorganic carbon or organic substances excreted from bacteria contributed to the growth of Nannochloropsis sp. in the case of sodium acetate. In the case of the supernatant of the slops, direct utilization of some organic substances may have occurred in addition to the mechanisms of sodium acetate utilization.
