Distribution and transfer of L-ascorbic acid (AsA) and α-tocopherol (Toc) in Japanese eel Anguilla japonica during the process of artificial maturation were examined (n=1) . In the experimental group that received salmon pituitary 20 mg/fish/week, the percentages of the distibution of both AsA and Toc in ovary were increased, while those in muscle were decreased, as the eel matured. This indicated that both AsA and Toc transfered from muscle to ovary. But the ratio of Toc transfering from muscle to ovary was lower than that of AsA. Therefore Toc was thought to be more difficult to transfer than AsA inside the eel's body. In the control group (saline), more AsA was distributed in ovary than in muscle, indicating the original amount of AsA in ovary was high. On the contrary little Toc was distributed in ovary, most of Toc was distributed in muscle. The percentage of the distribution of AsA in muscle of the control group was slightly decreased in the latter half of the experiment. It was thought to result from starvation or stress. In comparison Toc did not show such a phenomenon.
