Abstract
Virtual bronchoscopy is a straightforward way to produce continuous views of the same structure; displayed in rapid sequence, they create an animated scene, also known as a fly-through. This technique is known as virtual endoscopy and can simulate conventional fiberoptic endoscopy. In this paper, a virtual bronchoscopy system is proposed that is intended to be a highly interactive system. Unlike previous multi-resolution methods, the proposed method operates dynamically, simplifying the scene “on the fly” as the user′s viewing position shifts. We present an interactive rendering method for virtual bronchoscopic exploration on an inexpensive workstation. Research efforts have concentrated on the interactive navigation of the data sets. The subdivision of 3D bronchus data is computed off-line, pre-processed using a binary space partitioning algorithm. To perform interactive navigation, the binary space partitioning model has proved to be an appropriate method. Our method, motivated by the potentially visible set concept, performs dynamic rendering at interactive frame rates.
