Solubility of Chlorine in Aluminosilicate Slag Systems

Thermodynamic properties of chlorine in the CaO–SiO<sub>2</sub>–Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, Na<sub>2</sub>O–SiO<sub>2</sub>–Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>and CaO–SiO<sub>2</sub>–Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>–Na<sub>2</sub>O slags have been investigated in the present study. The experiments were carried out using gas-slag equilibrium, controlling both <I>P</I><sub>O<sub>2</sub></sub> and <I>P</I><sub>Cl<sub>2</sub></sub>simultaneously (<I>P</I><sub>O<sub>2</sub></sub>=10<sup>-16</sup> - 10<sup>-19</sup>atm, <I>P</I><sub>Cl<sub>2</sub></sub> = 10<sup>-10</sup> - 10<sup>-13</sup> atm at 1673–1748 K), and the solubility of chlorine in the 40mass%CaO–40mass%SiO<sub>2</sub>–20mass%Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>slag was found to vary in proportion to <I>P</I><sub>O<sub>2</sub></sub><sup>-1/4</sup> and <I>P</I><sub>Cl<sub>2</sub></sub><sup>1/2</sup> . Accordingly, the chloride capacity ( <I>C</I><sub>Cl<sup>–</sup></sub> ), which represents the ability of slags to absorb chlorine, has been defined as;<br><br><I>C<sub>Cl-</sub></I> =<sub><I>P</I><sub>Cl<sub>2</sub></sub><sup>1/2</sup></sub><sup><u>(mass%Cl-)<I>P</I><sub>O<sub>2</sub></sub><sup>1/4</sup></u></sup><br><br>The <I>C</I><sub>Cl<sup>–</sup></sub> values were observed to increase with increasing slag basicity and temperature, and showed a reasonable relationship with that of <I>C</I><sub>S<sup>2-</sup></sub>.
