1. The bulblets of Lilium japonicum, which were mass-produced in the dark at 23 °Cfor 5 to 6 months by a simplified aerated liquid culture system using polypropylene container, appear to be dormant because they produced no leaves during 16 weeks of cultivation after transplanting into soil.<BR>2. To promote leaf emergence and growth of the bulblets after transplanting into soil, low temperature or GA3 immersion treatment is required. Cold-storage of bulblets at 4 °Cfor 8 to 12 weeks was more effective in breaking dormancy than bulblet immersion in 200mg? liter-1 GA3.<BR>3. Bulbs of about 6.3 cm circumference were obtained after transplanting in vitro bulblets weighing 200 to 300 mg into soil.<BR>4. About 80% of the chilled bulbs with circumferences of 6.0 to 6.4 cm which wereplanted in pots in December flowered in March of the following year. These plants hadone flower and attained a height of about 20 cm.<BR>5. When bulbs with circumferences of 6.0 to 11.5 cm were re-chilled at 4 °C for 12weeks and replanted in mid-October, the flowering period was advanced to late Decemberand January rather than March. However, the non-chilled, transplanted bulbs floweredbetween May and June of the following year and some of the bulbs with circumferences of10.0 to 11.4 cm produced two flowers. When bulbs with circumferences of 7.0 cm or morewere transplanted into soil, they grew to more than 11.9 cm in circumference at harvest.<BR>Thus, by utilizing the simplified in vitro system to obtain mass-propagated bulbletsand subsequently exposing them to cold or GA treatment, flowering plants of L. japonicumcan be produced in about one year in the shortest case of cultivation period.
