In 10 cases with idiopathic facial paralysis, 5 patients were positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody. Furthermore, 18 (2.91%) out of 617 patients with chronic liver disease type C had the past history of idiopathic facial paralysis. The positive rate of the past history of idiopathic facial paralysis in patients with chronic liver disease type C was significantly higher than that in patients with essential hypertention (0.47%). These results suggest that idiopathic facial paralysis may be considered as one of the possible extrahepatic manifestations of HCV infection.
