抄録

The participants in this survey conducted by The Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan were patients with primary liver cancer diagnosed from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1997 in 829 hospitals throughout the country. 17, 534 cases including 16, 666 Hepatocellular carcinoma and 627 cholangiocellular carcinoma patients were collected. This report showed the present status of primary liver cancer in Japan in the view point of the epidemiology, clinicopathologic features, diagnosis and treatments. Furthermore, using both the above primary cases and 16, 766 cases who have been followed-up, the cumulative survival rates of the patients were calculated according to the histological types. In addition, the cumulative survival rates of the hepatocellular carcinoma patients who underwent hepatic resection, transarterial embolization, and percutaneous ethanol injection therapy were analyzed in relation to tumor size, tumor number, and clinical stage. These evidence provides a useful information for selecting a therapeutic modality for hepatocellular carcinoma.
