Four hundred and ninety-three liver transplants (477 patients) have been registered to Japan Liver Transplantation Study Group by April, 1996 from 45 hospitals throughout the country. Of these, 364 were living-related, and 129 were cadaveric. The most common indication was cholestatic disease (370 transplants). Living donor was parents (94.8%), other relative (3.8%), or spouse (1.4%). In living-related transplantation, ABO-identical donor was significantly less, and ABO-incompatible donor was significantly frequent, compared with cadaveric transplantation. The cumulative survival rates at 1-, 3-, and 5-year were 76%, 70%, and 65%, respectively, in cadaveric cases, whereas they were 79%, 76%, and 76% in living-related transplants. The cumulative survival rates were significantly worse in retransplantation (v. s. primary transplantation), and in ABO-incompatible cases (v. s. -identical, and v. s. -compatible). There were no significant differences between ABO-identical and -compatible cases.
