We have been pursuing in detailed pathological studies which does step sectioning by determining the width of 1-3mm former amount for the carcinoma of oral cavity. The pathological evaluation is done adding three items ((1) ie: intra-epithelial spread, (2) depth of invasion (ep·sm1-sm3·mp1-2), (3) dys (presence of the atypical epithelium of surgical margin)) to the usual one.<br>Because 9 cases of tongue carcinoma without the pre-treatment were examined among the tongue carcinoma 43 cases, it is reported to step sectioning by this method. Superficially tongue carcinoma is limited in the surface from the position of the middle of a stratum basale and a muscularis propia (sm 2).<br>Superficially limited tongue carcinoma was seen by 9 cases (31.0%) in 29 cases of pT 1·2 tongue carcinoma. In depth of invasion, sm1 was been by 6 cases (66.7%), and sm2 was seen by 3 cases (33.3%). Intraepitherial spread (ie) was seen by 7 cases (77.8%). Moreover, dys (+) was seen by 6 cases (66.7%). The recurennce of primary lesion in 29 tongue carcinomas was 7 cases (24.1%) and it was cases (6.9%) in superficially limited carcinoma. On the other hand, the recurrence rate of invasive carcinoma was 14.7% (5 cases).
