抄録

The purposes of this paper are to describe the evolution of discussions and activities over Downtown Seattle planning from 1960 to 2000 from the following viewpoints which are indicated as problems in restructuring urban neighborhoods of Japanese cities: forming a consistent planning system, coordinating various planning activities, and creating a common neighborhood vision, and to clarify how these problems were historically dealt in Downtown Seattle. We conclude that the visions of Downtown Seattle and its neighborhoods have been gradually created since 1960s over various discussions and activities, that the consistent planning system was formed afterward in 1990s, and that various planning activities are well coordinated to create a better downtown.
