We report a 51-year-old male patient with a malignant melanoma who had rectal metastasis 77 months after resection of the primary lesion on his face. In 1988, he underwent resection of a subcutaneous tumor at a nearby hospital. The lesion was histologically diagnosed as a malignant melanoma of the face, and the patient then received chemotherapy and radiation treatment. He visited our department in July, complaining of bloody stools and lower abdominal pain, which had begun around May in 1995. An elevated lesion, which looked like a submucosal tumor, was detected in upper the rectum by colonoscopy. This tumor was histologi-cally diagnosed as a rectal metastasis of the previous malignant melanoma. He received a proctectomy at the department of surgery in our hospital, to prevent continuous anal bleeding. Malignant melanoma is known to metastasize throughout the body, including the gastrointestinal tract. Many studies have reported improvement of symptoms after aggressive surgical intervention in gastrointestinal metastasis of malignant mela-noma, especially small intestinal metastasis. We found no reports of rectal metastasis of malignant melanoma having been surgically resected in Japan. Therefore, this was a rare case considered worthy of reporting.
