Abstract

As the first step in the dynamic control of the purse wire tension for a 135 GT purse seiner during a fishing operation, the effectiveness of a Neural Network model to estimate the wire tension is described based on the postulation that the output shows a nonlinear response to the input during the final step of the pursing work, j.e., the sinker edge of the net cup being almost closed, which corresponds to the step of the largest purse wire tension in other words, the largest heel of the seiner. Based on the results measured from a test model in a tank (with zero winding up speed of wire), estimates with a satisfactory level of accuracy can be obtained for the purse wire tension under a compound wave, in spite of the estimation difficulty using a linear model. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of the Neural Network model to the nonlinear response system of tension between the purse wire and purse seiner in heavy beam seas.
