Abstract

A rapid preconcentration method based on solvent extraction is described for the determination of zinc in sea water using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Micro amounts of zinc in the form of a 5-methylthiophen-2-aldehyde-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone complex were extracted from sea water in diisobutyl ketone (DIBK). Zinc is quantitatively separated and then concentrated from the chief ingredients of sea water, and the value of the recovery was more than 101.2% when artificial sea water was used. The concentration of zinc in coastal sea water was found to be 5.6-22.9μgl-1 using the proposed method.
