In order to clarify breed difference in fat accumulation and its region in pig body, the cross sections of carcass cut at the thoracic, lumber and sacral vertebra of the pigs were measured and compared. Breeds in this study included: Landrace (L), large white (W), Duroc (D) and first cross of Landrace and Duroc (LD). Two or three castrates and gilts of each breed were tested, totalling 22 pigs. They were slaughtered at the body weight of 105kg. The remaining halves of the carcasses were frozen and stored at -30°C in plastic bags. Frozen carcasses were cut at each vertebra from the first thoracic to the second sacral, and these cross sections were photographed. Areas of subcutaneous, abdominal and intermuscular fat, as well as the whole cross sections, were measured using an image analysis system. Total cross sectional area of the W was significantly the largest in all regions, but no significant differences were found among other breeds. Areas of subcutaneous and abdominal fats of the W were the largest in almost all cross sections, but differences among the D, LD, and L were not significant. Areas of intermuscular fat in many regions in the thoracic vertebra of the W and D appeared to be larger than those of the L and LD, but no significant difference among breeds was observed in any part of the lumbar vertebra. Total area of fat of the W was significantly the largest in all almost regions, being characteristic of the breed. Sums of cross sectional areas of bones and muscles have shown no statistical significant difference among breeds in almost all regions. Carcass fat volume ratios were estimated from cross sectional area and the length of carcasses. The carcass fat volume ratios of the W were significantly larger than those of LD, while the volume ratios between bones and muscles of the LD were significantly larger than those of the W. This ratio of the L and D fell between those of the W and LD. These results suggested that there was breed difference in fat accumulation and its region in pigs.
