Eight finishing pigs (weight, 74.4-88.6kg) were divided into two groups and each of them was fed formula feed as a control diet or formula feed containing approximately 2.9% calcium soap of linseed oil as an experimental diet during the last 28 days before slaughtering to investigate α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) level and some other n-3 fatty acid levels in lipids from the blood serum, organs and muscle of the pig. Daily gain and feed conversion of the pigs fed the experimental diet were 0.85kg/d and 3.78, 0.89kg/d and 3.67 for the control pigs and there were no significant differences on feed intake, carcass weight, liver and kidney weights, and muscle color of the loin between the pigs fed the experimental diet and the control pigs. On the final day of the experiment, C18:3n-3 level in the lipids from blood serum of the pigs fed the experimental diet was 8.3%, 0.5% for the control (P<0.01). In addition, eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3) level in lipids from the blood serum increased (P<0.01) by feeding the experimental diet, whereas arachidonic (C20:4n-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) levels decreased (P<0.01). Furthermore, the n-6/n-3 (2.9) ratio in lipids from blood serum of the pigs fed the experimental diet was narrower than that (11.9) of the control pigs. C18:3n-3 levels in the liver and kidney were greater in the pigs fed the experimental diet than those from the control, whereas C20:4n-6 appeared to be less in the former than in the latter. C18:3n-3 level in lipids from loin of the pigs fed the experimental diet was 2.6%, 0.5% for that of the control pigs, whereas n-6/n-3 ratio of the former was 3.3, 10.1 for the latter. The results suggested that there was a possibility of estimating n-6/n-3 ratio of the muscle lipids from that of the serum lipids because the n-6/n-3 ratio of the loin lipids were considerably associated with that of the blood serum lipids.
