Abstract

Recent reports on artificial insemination by use of the frozen boar semen have shown that fertilization rate is lower than that of the liquid semen. The study reported here was conducted to gain the fertilization rate at the early embryonic stage. Twenty five multiparous sows (LW) and 2 gilts were inseminated with the semen of one boar (Duroc), slaughtered in several days following the insemination, and then the ova were collected. The average fertilization rate of 17 sows the ove of which collected was 53.3% and the average number of fertilized ova concluded from number of corpora lutea was 11.3. Fifteen out of 17 sows stated above were nultiparae inseminated with liquid semen in the past and the mean litter size was 12.3 at that time. Also the average number of the ova fertilized using liquid semen at the present study was 16.2. These results suggested that the lower fertilization rate in sows inseninated with frozen semen was due to the use of frozon semen. But the mechanism was not clear.
