Abstract

A 38-year-old man, who had been in the institution for cerebral paralysis and mental retardation, vomited and complained of abdominal pain. A plane rentogenogram of the abdomen and an abdominal CT scan demonstrated giant intestinal gas and a colonoscopy revealed obstruction of the right colon with taper of the lumen. Under a diagnosis of cecal volvulus, he was referred to the hospital with the aim of surgical intervention. The right side colon was found to be unattached to the retroperitoneum and rotated 360 degree counterclockwise. Because the strangulated colon became necrotic with tear of the serosa, a resection of the right side colon was performed. Throughout the postoperative course, he seldom complained of wound pain, and we encountered no troubles and complications due to mental retardation.
