Abstract

With a recent increase in associated use of mammccccphy in mass-screening for breast cancer, nonpalpable lesions with only finding of fine calcification have been increasingly detected. In our hospital, we perform fookwire-aided excisional biopsy for fine calcification without any findings on palpation and ultrasonography. From 1993 to 2000, a total of 28 patients have undergone this hookwire-aided excisional biopsy. Of them, eight patiets had malignancy including five with non-invasive cancer, and 20 patients were clarified to have benign lesion, a detecting rate being 28.5%. These fine calcification pictures were investigated in terms of four items including distribution morphology, density, presence of linear pattern, and concentration. As a result, no malignancy was noted in cases of which number of fine calcification was less than four per five millimeters square. And the coexistence of malignancy and benign was seen in cases with the number ranged five to nine; of which malignant cases revealed linear morphology or high concentration of calcification.<br> It is concluded that histopathological diagnosis is needed, even if the ninber of fine calcification ranges from to nine per five millimeters square but other malignant findings are associated.
