Abstract

An 82-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after a traffic accident. On the next day, abdominal X-ray films demonstrated the presence of free air, and an emergency operation was performed under a diagnosis of traumatic perforation of the alimentary tract. During surgery, a ruptured region of the ileum was recognized and a partial resection of the ileum about 30cm in length with end-to-end anastomosis was performed. A remarkable decrease of neutrophil and septic shock developed perioper-atively. On administering of G-CSF immediately after the operation, the patient recovered from critical condition, and white blood cells increased in a few hours. G-CSF therapy should be tried for serious infection with neutropenia like in this case.
