Abstract

We report a rare case of carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 producing mucinous gastric cancer which showed 800U/ml (normal range: <37) of CA 19-9 in serum. A 70-year-old man was pointed out a high value of serum CA 19-9 by a follow up examination of silent gallstone. Gastricendoscopy visualized a Borrmann type III lesion on the anterior wall of the angle following a biopsy result of mucinous cancer. Distal gastrectomy with regional lymph node dissection was performed, with cholecystectomy for gallstone. Histologically, the lesion, measuring 55×50mm, revealed mucinous carcinoma (se, ly0, v0, n1). Serum CA 19-9 level decreased within the normal range after the operation. The normalized CA 19-9 level has been kept up to now for one year. We think that the patient group with a high CA 19-9 value has a poor prognosis, and consequently a strict follow-up.
