Abstract

A 52-year-old man came to our hospital because of epigastric discomfort. Endoscopy showed type 2' gastric cancer on the posterior wall of the antrum. A preoperative diagnosis of type 2' gastric cancer was made, and distal partial gastrectomy and D2 lymph node dissection were conducted. Histological findings showed small uniform anaplastic cells with a large nucleocytoplasmic ratio proliferating to the submucosal layer. Grimelius staining, chromogranin A staining, and NSE staining were positive. The tumor was diagnosed as early gastric neuroendocrine cell carcinoma. Gastric neuroendocrine cell carcinoma is relatively rare and its prognosis is very poor. Only 29 cases have been reported in the Japanese literature. The prognosis of this disease in the early stage without lymph node metastasis is good. Gastrectomy with lymph nodes dissection before lymph node metastasis is thus a valuable therapy.
