Abstract

A 71-year-old woman was examined at our hospital because of a positive stool test. A barium enema revealed an elevated lesion in the ascending colon, and a right hemicolectomy was performed. Immuno-histochemically, the resected specimen was positive for synaptophysin and NCAM. The tumor was diagnosed as an endocrine cell carcinoma. Four months after the surgery, a liver metastasis was detected. Percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT) and percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT) was performed. The patient is presently doing well with no symptoms for 18 months since the surgery.<br> Endocrine cell carcinoma of the colon and the rectum is rare, but these usions are associated with very high malignant potential for lymphatic, vascular, and liver metastases. The prognosis is poor, so effective multimodal therapy, including surgical intervention and chemotherapy, should be performed.
