Abstract

The concentrations of free amino acids in sow colostrum and serum of neonatal piglets were determined from farrowing to 1 week of lactation in this study.
The concentrations of total free amino acids, except for taurine were little, and methionine and cystine were no measurable in colostrum until 24 hours of lactation. Taurine was the most abundant free amino acid in sow milk through the experimental period and kept continually over 80μmol/dl in defatted milk. However, glycine, alanine, aspartate, glutamate, and glutamine were increased linearly, as time progressed after 48 hours of lactation. Thus, total nonessential amino acids were also increased linearly from 15.65μmol/dl at parturition to 356.49μmol/dl at 1 week of lactation in defatted milk.
Glycine and alanine were the most abundant serum free amino acids in neonatal piglets and amounted to 40% of total amino acids at birth (before suckling). Regardless of a small amount of free amino acids in colostrum, the concentrations of serum free essential and nonessential amino acids in neonatal piglets were increased drastically at 12 hours after birth. Especially, tyrosine and proline were increased eightfold and fivefold compared to those at birth, respectively. Proline is the most abundant serum free amino acid in neonatal piglets from 12 hours to 72 hours after birth. Therefore, we indicated that serum free amino acids in piglets would be affected by peptide and protein rather than free amino acids in colostrum.
