A 46-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of renal failure due to polycystic kidney. She had been pointed out having a linea alba hernia 12 years before admission, but she had left it alone. During hospital stay, she complained of abdominal pain and was referred to the department.
A childhead-sized mass was seen under the umbilicus, and it was proved to be a portion of the colon by a CT scan. An operation was performed. The giant sac was found protruding through the 4×5cm sized defect of linea alba under the umbilicus, and the contents of sac was the sigmoid colon. The sac was dessected out and then the hilus of hernia was closed.
Linea alba hernia is a rare condition, and so far 51 cases have been reported in Japan. Further lower abdominal linea alba hernia is so rare that only 4 cases including our case have been reported. In combination with weakness of the linea alba, abdominal high pressure due to obesity and polycystic kidney might be the cause in this case.
