Abstract

We experienced a case of Schwannoma with cystic degeneration in the pelvic space. An 81-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of lumbago. By a digital examination, the tumor was palpated which compressed the right wall of the rectum. By barium enema study, colonoscopic examination, and CT scan he was diagnosed as having a retroperitoneal cystic tumor, and an operation was performed. Intraoperative trans-anal ultrasonography visualized a multilocular tumor with a homogenous internal echo. The tumor bordered on the right wall of the rectum, and it had a thick fibrous capsule with a thickness of 5mm. Only the tumor was resected preserving the rectum and ureter. The excised tumor was 6.5×5.5×4.8cm in dimention. Hisological diagnosis was neurinoma of Antoni A type. Specific stainings with S-100 protein and NSE were positive.
