Twenty cases of congenital dilation of the bile duct were examined for pathological changes of the liver and choledochus, as well as for the correlation of these changes with clinical items. Hepatopathological changes were noted in all cases. Interstitial changes were more frequently noted than cellular changes and were correlated one with another. For lesions as moderate as choledochal inflammation, middle-high inflammation was predominant, but was not correlated with hepato-pathological change. In terms of the correlation of hepato-pathological change with clinical items, correlations were noted between cellular changes and age at operation, and between interstitial change and age at operation, morbid period, GOT value, low values of serum and bile amylase, but was noted as correlations between choledochal inflammation and clinical items. The above results suggest that hepatopathy of congenital dilation of the bile duct may be reflected in hepato-interstitial changes, and this hepatopathy is supposed to involve obstructive hepatopathy due to either severe regurgitation cholangitis under the influence of embryological and immunological problems or other factor, to a greater extent than influential regurgitation of pancreatic juice due to abnormal pancreatico-choledochal duct junction.
