Abstract

A case of gastric cancer forming a tumor embolus of 3 cm in diameter in the superior mesenteric vein was experienced. The patient was a 60-year-old woman. Preoperative computed tomography showed a tumor embolus in the superior mesenteric vein and no metastasis in the liver. pancreatoduodenectomy, resection of the transverse colon and resection of superior mesenteric vein about 4 cm in length were performed. The patient is now alive without any evidence of recurrence as of 2 years after the surgery. Today's advance in imaging diangnostic methods has incresed a chance to encounter this condition. Aggressive extended excision with resection of the portal vein would be essential for improvement of prognosis in the case of restricted tumor embolus in the portal vein without liver metastasis nor peritoneal dissemination.
