Abstract

We had an experience of a 29-year-old woman who became pregnant and successfully delivered a child by cesarean section after ileostomy. When she was 26-year-old she underwent total colectomy, partial resection of the rectum and ileostomy because of ulcerative colitis (revival-remission type, total colitis type). One year and 5 months after this operation, she became pregnant the first child and delivered a healthy baby girl. In spite of handicaps due to undergoing total colectomy and ileostomy, and taking Salazosulfapyridine and Prednisolone, there was no impediment for maintenance of pregnancy and condition of the embryo. There was occurrence of general and local complications in her pregnant course. Laceration of the small intestine at laparotomy in cesarean section was repaired. We employed a cesarean section owing to obstetric reasons, but normal delivery for ostomates appeared to be possible sufficiently. There have been only 9 reported cases of pregnancy in ostomates in Japan. Some notes on a review of the literature are also presented.
