Abstract
In order to evaluate the effects of two representative sclerosing solutions in the sclerotherapy of varicose leg veins, the therapeutic outcomes, 6 months after sclerotherapy with venous interruption were compared between the two groups; group P: patients treated by 3% polidocanol, group C: those by 14.6% hypertonic sacline.
Sclerosing potency of 14.6% hypertonic saline was weaker than 3% polidocanol because the recurrence rate was 38.1% in group C compared with 5.9% in group P.
On the other hand, early complications such as severe thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis occurred in 29.4% for group P compared with no remarkable complications for group C. Furthermore, induration and pigmentation of the sclerosing lesions treated by 3% polidocanol were more prominent than those by 14.6% hypertonic saline. However, the symptoms disappeared in over 80% of the patients and most of those were satisfied with sclerotherapy using 3% polidocanol.
It is important to improve therapeutic techniques to avoid complications and adverse sequelae in case of using 3% polidocanol and to enhance the sclerosing action in 14.6% hypertonic saline.
