Abstract

A 14-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of a right lower abdominal pain and fever. He was diagnosed as acute appendicitis. On the next day an appendectomy was performed without any complications. After awakening on the first post-operative day, he felt severe chest pains. Pulmonary angiography and RI scintigraphy revealed a thrombosis of the left upper lobe of the lung. Then urokinase was injected due to thrombolysis therapy. He suffered from respiratory distress due to severe chest pain, and then artificial ventilation was applied. He successfully recovered, and was discharged from the hospital on 16th post-operative day. There were no abnormal findings in the coagulation system of the blood for the patient. A probable cause of pulmonary thrombosis in this case might be his lying in bed for two days. There has been no signs of recurrence, as of 6 months after discharge. We emphasize that pulmonary thrombosis can occurs at all operation and all age.
