Abstract

A rare case of pseudosarcoma with ossification of the esophagus is reported. A 58-year-old woman had a polypoid tumor in the upper and middle third of the esophagus. Subtotal esophagectomy and gastric tube reconstruction were performed. The tumor was a 5.5×3.3cm polypoid lesion composed of moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and various mesenchymal tissues, in which there was no gradual transition. We diagnosed it with pseudosarcoma, because immunohistochemically the sarcomatous lesion showed positive staining for α-smooth muscle actin, α-antichimotrypsin and vimentin but negative for keratin and epithelial membrane antigen, and because the sarcomatous lesion with fibrogenesis like smooth muscle and osscification showed no severe atypia. We supposed that in this case the polypoid tumor was formed in consequence of rapidly growing mesenchymal cells after ulceration in the middle of the cancer, and the oral side of polypoid tumor was reduced by mechanical stimulation and sequentially reformed by granuration responsively.
