Abstract

A retroperitoneal tumor, which was incidentally pointed out beside the aorta by CT and MRI in a 58-year-old man under the close examination for the kidney, was successfully excised. The excised tumor was elastical soft, well defined and cystic in the cut section. The histological diagnosis was benign schwannoma with mixed features of Antoni type A and type B. Based on intraoperative findings and postoperative complaints, we speculated that the tumor arised from the lumbar plexus. Postoperative course was uneventful. The patient is strictly followed up on an outpatient department. Retroperitoneal schwannoma arising from the lumbar plexus is rare, and only five patients including ours have been reported in Japan so far.
