Abstract

We experienced a case of phyllodes tumor in a juvenile which presented difficulty in differentiation from giant fibroadenoma. A 14-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital because of a rapidly enlarging tumor of the left breast. A 5.5×5.5cm elastic soft and well defined tumor was palpated in the left breast. The tumor was diagnosed as phyllodes tumor because of multiple small cysts in the solid mass revealed by ultrasonography (US). It was difficult to distinguish phyllodes tumor from fibroadenoma even with histological study of surgical specimens. A comparison between phyllodes tumor in this patient and giant fibroadenoma in another juvenile patient experienced in the same period was made. There was no difference in histological finding, pathological examination and estrogen receptor (ER) expression between them. A status of cyst formation was more remarkable in this case than the other that was an only different point. We think that the clonality analysis should be applied for the discrimination between phyllodes tumor and giant fibroadenoma.
