Atrial fibrillations is a common form of arrhythmia in adult patietns with atrila septal defect and it becomes more common in older patients, especially those over 50 years old. Of course, age is one of the most important risk factors for atrial fibrillation with atrial septal defect but we have examined another risk factor in this study. Subjects were 35 adult patients over 20 years old undergoing aperation for atrial septal defect. Of these 35 patients, five patients had already developed atrial fibrillation and LADI, LVDdI and RVDdI were significantly longer than those in patients who were in sinus rhythm before surgery. Of 30 patients who were in sinus rhythm, seven patients transiently developed atrial fibrillation after surgery, and the axis of P wave on preoperative electrocardiography significantly deviated to the right compare to that in 23 patients who remained in sinus rhysm after surgery (61.9±14.8 versus 35.7±22.0; p<0.01). So we consider that the right axis deviation of the P wave is another predictor of atrial fibrillation in adults with atrial septal defects.
